Listening Exercise

Issued 20 July 2007

Dear Chaplain

I am writing to ask for your comments on the attached draft booklet prepared to form the basis for advice to health commissioners in England about healthcare chaplaincy. Please will you send your comments to me by no later than end August 2007 so that the booklet can be finalised in the early Autumn.

The background to this listening exercise is that with the changes in NHS structure and style in 2005, the Caring for the Spirit NHS Project established a workstream to consider advice about the future shape and structure of chaplaincy-spiritual care. That working group developed a series of working papers (which can be accessed on the NHS chaplaincy collaboartives website) from which they have now prepared this draft booklet.

In considering how best to comment please would you seek to answer the following questions:

(a) What changes to the descriptions of chaplaincy work and activity would be necessary for these to match your own understanding and practice?
(b) What further clarification is needed to explain chaplaincy practice effectively to commissioners?
(c ) Are there any additional cautions you would want to see included in this advice?

I look forward to hearing from you by the end of August.

Future shape/structure of spiritual healthcare

Issued 15 May 2007

These working papers on the future shape/structure of spiritual healthcare relate to a draft booklet for NHS Commissioners which will be subject to a listening exercise with chaplains between June and August 2007.

In the meantime, two papers are made available for those who would like to help define what is "produced" in a typical working week. The first of these describes the progress to date with examining this issue with some 20+ chaplains. As can be seen the commentary is hesitant and more data is necessary.

The second paper is a data collection sheet which should be completed and sent to Tim Battle at tim.battle@c-of-e.org.uk so that it can be added to the database. Before the booklet for NHS commissioners is published (in September), we will update the data to reflect the best fit.

Many thanks for your help
